handmade small-batch watercolors

Meet the Artist:

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Amber Spence. I am an Augusta native and I make handmade watercolor paints. I have been making paint since late 2019 and I am a stay-at-home wife and mother.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
I make watercolor paint using a basic, non-toxic binder recipe consisting of mostly distilled water, gum arabic, honey, and a few other ingredients. I use clove oil in the binder to preserve the paint and it also adds a nice smell. I use all kinds of pigments in my handmade watercolors. Natural pigments, synthetic pigments, shimmer pigments, and even special effect pigments including color shift or chameleon pigments, holographic pigments, and glitters.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Seeing others use and enjoy my paints is my greatest inspiration.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I went to Tokyo, Japan for a vacation with my husband in 2019. We can’t wait to go back.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
My favorite thing about Downtown Augusta is the Riverwalk or eating at Knuckle Sandwiches with my husband!

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
I love to design, create, and make because it allows me to express myself beyond my daily responsibilities.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Always make sure you’re having fun.
