Meet the Artist:
WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Amanda Thornton. My husband, Hollis Brown Thornton, is an established artist and inspired me to pursue a creative outlet. I’ve been able to work from home raising our 6 year old daughter while learning and exploring macrame and other fiber mediums in Aiken, SC. I am a fiber artist.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
I mainly focus on making things that can be a part of your everyday environment. Plant hangers and wall hangings are what I make the most of and it brings me such joy knowing that my work catches the corner of your eye several times in a day and becomes a part of your daily life. I also restore rush chair seats and other various chair frames, which I adore doing to bring back usage to family heirloom furniture.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Simplicity. Even though my work can look complex as it’s formed from thousands and thousands of knots made by hand, I love the simple nature of macramé. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I met my husband on MySpace.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
I love the restaurants that DT Augusta has to offer. Whether I want something ethnic or classic American, I can spend a little or
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
Macramé is a very rhythmic medium that is almost therapeutic to do. Once I get in the flow, time awareness slips away and it’s very satisfying to step back and take a gander at a finished product.
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Value your time, whether it’s to an event or obligation and all the way down to the pricing of your work. Value your time.
