nature art & whimsical taxidermy

Meet the Maker:

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Jessica Shoemaker and I’m from Irmo, SC. I create nature art and whimsical taxidermy.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
I start with a specimen ~ either found locally, received from a local farm or sustainably sourced from aviaries or pet food suppliers. Once I prepare my specimens, I can start the process of bug pinning or the taxidermy process! Once they are dried and cured, I’m able to create their new forever enclosures for their beauty to be preserved for a lifetime.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I’m inspired by early Victorian taxidermy and Mother Nature. I’m also inspired by the idea of changing the stigma of bugs and small taxidermy. I want people to see their beauty and appreciate how beautiful every living creature is.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I was a Marketing Manager for a Harley Davidson dealership for 15 years before taking my art full time!

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
Being an artist isn’t just my job, it’s my passion. I’ve loved art and being creative ever since I could pick up a crayon. I love multiple mediums but when I started doing taxidermy, I was able to join my love for sculpture, sewing, composition and creativity.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Keep making. It’s not always going to be perfect, and that’s okay. You still created something and that’s a beautiful thing.
